And yet, one might say: "Yeah, they crank the graphics up to maximum, all at the cost of poor optimization". – Well, let's look at that. Test of Witcher 3 1080p Maxed Out Settings GTX 980, I7-4790k (the top spec of the time). Basically 40-50FPS throughout the game, people in the comments and other videos mentioning you can reach stable 60fps after tweaking some settings off (hair and foliage mostly). Test of Dark Souls 3 1080p GTX 980 runs perfectly fine at locked 60fps, even though the game is full of random stutters and huge FPS drops. I actually tried DS 3 2016 version myself, and on my i5-9600k+3090+64gb main temple still has huge fps drops, as well as some other starting locations. And that's GOTY version, after some post-release fixes. You can try it yourself. Test of GTA 5 PC 1080p GTX 1080 (next-gen card, year after PC release of GTA 5) runs at 30-70FPS with past-gen graphics at the time. Test of Skyrim PC, FullHD, Ultra Settings, GTX 570, Intel Core I7-860, basically an ultimate setup at a time. Along the video FPS changes between 50 and 70, sometimes dropping, sometimes skyrocketing. Overall - average is 68, minimal is 22. Test of Battlefield 4 , FullHD, GTX 670, which was released one year before the game, kinda outdated 4-years old CPU I5 750, 12gb of DDR3. Not the top-top spec, but as stated in the description, running BF3 at a solid ~60FPS. Yet, having 35-40 FPS in a new game. On top of that, we can look at the comment section, where author said "Upgraded to an i5 3750k + 16gb DDR3 (1600MHz) Ram. I can get 45-60fps on average on ultra graphics. I just play on medium graphics now. They barely look different." Enough with examples, I tried to be less biased and pick games often perceived as examples of good optimization on release, and you got a look at older YouTube videos of any popular release, to see that most advanced-graphics games were having performance issues. And it is not that surprising, game development was always at the edge of technologies, which means it is hard and sometimes problematic.
