I believe that most of you have seen this picture, which describes how fast steam market grows. The chart shows us the increasingly growing saturation on the market, measured in games released. And yes, the valid argument that most of those are "low quality" to say the least, holds true; we still see increase in "good" games too. Combine that with rapid growth of content on social platforms and you get complete chaos and dopamine-fatigued audience. What that means for the developer is rather obvious for most of us: It became harder and harder to pull attention to your game and get your player into your game for a reasonable amount of time, so that they don't quit immediately. Marketing, especially "first-push release" marketing, became a crucial part of development, to the point where a big part of the total budget consists of the marketing budget, in some cases, exceeding the development cost by a large margin.
